Nitza Danieli Horner

Teaching Artist
Freelance Educator at the Metropolitan Museum of Art

Biography

Nitza Horner is a teaching artist and freelance educator at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. She teaches art in schools, shelters, hospitals, and many other nonprofit organizations. Ms. Horner leads her own program titled “Paint the Music,” a unique multi-media program where integrated audiences create original artwork inspired by live jazz. She studied at the Art Teachers College in Ramat Hasharon, Israel, and has traveled extensively in Australia and England.

Nitza worked with Palestinians and Israelis in collaboration with author Robert Wolf to create the book Violence in the Holy Land (Free River Press, 2004), in which her work “10/14/1973” was published.

A sculptor, she works in stone, concrete, plaster, and clay. She was recently commissioned by the Puffin Foundation to create a permanent sculpture installation in its Outdoor Sculpture Garden in Teaneck, NJ. The work is a multi-dimensional, interactive piece called “Roots of Empathy”, deriving from Ms. Horner’s experiences working with individuals with varying challenges and in recognition of the Foundation’s commitment to protection of both the environment and the under-represented cultural landscape.

Additional artistic awards include first place at the juried art show “SummerFest” in New Jersey.

Nitza has worked with the Friends’ Health Connection before. She taught participants new ways to enhance cognitive abilities and increase self-awareness through artistic creativity. Participants learned how to see detail in slides, chosen from The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s collection, that reflect ancient myths such as Egyptian afterlife and legends such as George Washington crossing the Delaware River. Participants used colored pencils to create a take-home sketchbook capturing a legendary moment in their childhood. This workshop helped members promote emotional and physical healing through the fundamentals of art creation.
